About Alpacas

Alpacas, cousins to the llama, are beautiful, intelligent animals native to the Andean Mountain range of South America. They are considerably smaller than llamas and were bred specifically for their luxurious fiber, which is used for making knitted and woven items similar to wool.

Adult alpacas stand at approximately 36 inches at the withers and generally weigh between 150 and 200 pounds. They are alert, intelligent, curious, and predictable. Alpacas are social animals that seek companionship and communicate most commonly by softly humming.

Alpaca fiber was once reserved for royalty! It's as warm as wool but only 1/3 the weight. The fiber comes in 16 natural colors, is naturally hypoallergenic (no lanolin), and is incredibly soft - often compared to cashmere.

Fun Alpaca Facts

  • Alpacas have soft padded feet instead of hooves, leaving terrain undamaged
  • They "cut" grass with their bottom teeth and upper palate - no upper teeth!
  • Alpaca droppings make excellent, natural, low-odor fertilizer
  • While they can spit, it's almost always reserved for other alpacas, not humans!
  • An adult alpaca produces 5-8 lbs of fiber when shorn annually
